“I cried with all my heart; answer me, O LORD! I will observe Your statutes. I cried to You; save me, and I shall keep Your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in Your words.” Three times in these verses, the psalmist “cries” out to God with all his heart. Like Hannah before him, he pours out his soul before the Lord (1 Samuel 1:15). Prayer is the pouring out of our hearts to God, with our requests shaped by the promises of His Word. As one writer beautifully put it, “He pleads the promises. He longs not for a future invented by him but for the destiny promised by God.” The psalmist’s prayers are guided by God’s covenant promises, not by the fleeting inclinations of his own understanding at any given moment. This is how Christ Himself prayed throughout His life. “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety” (Hebrews 5:7). Throughout His life, Christ, “Although He was a Son, learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5:8–10). Because of this, the writer of Hebrews declares, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Christ, having become truly human, understands us completely—every weakness, every sorrow, every need—and is deeply moved in His heart to intercede for us. Knowing us better than we know ourselves, Christ continues to pour out His soul before our Heavenly Father, praying all the promises that secure our salvation and our glorious future with Him in His Father’s kingdom. “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). Even now, as you read these words, Christ is pouring out His heart to God on behalf of all who put their trust in Him for eternal salvation. What a comfort to know that your Savior lives to pray for you! |
