“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Romans 10:4

Paul is not teaching that God’s law has ended because of the coming of Christ. Rather, there has been a change in the promise of eternal life.

In the covenant of Creation, the promise of life was made on the basis of works. On the day Adam broke the creation commands, he would die.

“The LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.’” Genesis 2:16-17

But with the coming of Christ, a new covenant was ratified in His blood.

“And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.’” Matthew 26:27-28

This new covenant was no longer based on doing but on believing.

As someone once wrote, “He is not righteous who does much, but he who, without work, believes much in Christ.”

The Apostle Paul writes, “But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness…”

Romans 4:5

It’s not that the law of God has been set aside, but the basis of our salvation is no longer based on our obedience but on faith in the obedience of Christ on our behalf.

“For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.” Romans 5:19

Hence, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Romans 10:4.
