“Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6

For centuries, Christians have cherished the 23rd Psalm as a wellspring of hope, assurance, and comfort. Its timeless words seem to embrace us in every circumstance and season of life we encounter.

I find the sixth verse particularly meaningful, and I’d like to highlight one subtle enhancement to the translation. The word “follow” could be even more beautifully rendered as “pursue.” God’s goodness and steadfast love don’t merely trail behind us in a quiet, passive way. No—they pursue us. This love is vibrant and active, seeking us out to uplift and sustain us. It never leaves us on our own. God’s goodness and lovingkindness are deeply personal, intentional, and unwavering, just as He is unchanging. Think of how God sought Adam in the garden after his fall—tenderly calling out to him. In the same way, His goodness and love pursue us relentlessly, every single day of our lives.

Another translation captures it this way:

“Surely goodness and lovingkindness will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of Yahweh forever.”

Rest in this comforting truth: God’s unchanging goodness and faithful love are actively pursuing His people, His beloved, every day of their lives. Those who believe and trust Him are never beyond His reach, and their home with Him is secure forever.

May God richly bless you and keep you this day.
